Päivi Severeide is the harp principal in the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also been the harp principal in the chamber orchestra Avanti! since 2011. Severeide graduated as Master of Music at the Sibelius Academy in 2008, where she studied the harp mainly under Reija Bister and during the final stage of her studies also under Arielle Valibouse. She has also studied at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in Sarah O’Brien’s harp class. She gave her debut concert in Helsinki in 2009 after receiving full marks in her diploma degree.
Severeide played as a young soloist with the Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2005. Following this she appeared in soloist assignments and as chamber musician at several festivals and in concert series with both traditional harp repertoire and contemporary music, most recently as soloist in the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra where she played music by Debussy and Brian Ferneyhough. Before taking office in Turku she worked as an orchestral musician in Finnish orchestras as well as in Sweden and Norway. In addition to this she worked for a long time as a substitute soloist in the Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera. During the past few years Severeide has given performances as a chamber musician and soloist at the music festivals of Naantali, Kimito Island and Hauho, at the Crusell Music Festival in Uusikaupunki, at Avanti!’s music festival Summer Sounds as well as at the chamber music festival KuruFest.
In addition to her artistic activities, Päivi Severeide is the responsible harp teacher at the Uniarts Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy. She is the artistic director of the first Nordic Harp Festival, held 13–16 February 2020 at Musiikkitalo in Helsinki.
